Dementia is a syndrome associated with neurodegenerative diseases, leading to a decline in cognitive abilities affecting daily activities. Symptoms include memory problems, emotional issues, and difficulties with language. It is not a normal part of aging and can range from mild to severe stages. Age is a primary risk factor, and it is not inevitable with aging. Mild cognitive impairment is a stage between normal aging and dementia. Dementia can have multiple causes, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular disease, Lewy body disease, substance use, and exposure to toxins. Genetic factors can play a role in Alzheimer's disease. Dementia can also be caused by head injury, nutritional deficiencies, Down syndrome, and other specific conditions. Symptoms vary depending on the cause, with cognitive deficits affecting memory, language, judgment, and behavior. Diagnosis requires observing a change from usual mental functioning and greater cognitive decline than normal aging.
