Abdominal obesity-metabolic syndrome 1, also known as metabolic syndrome X, is a condition characterized by a cluster of medical issues including abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and elevated fasting glucose levels. It affects approximately 1 in 4 U.S. adults and is a significant risk factor for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. The syndrome's etiology is complex, influenced by genetic and environmental factors, with varying prevalence among different ethnic groups. Risk factors for metabolic syndrome include age, smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, and physical inactivity. This syndrome is associated with insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, essential hypertension, glucose intolerance, and an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Metabolic syndrome raises the risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke due to the biochemical processes in the body. Heart disease in this context refers to coronary heart disease, where plaque buildup in the arteries can lead to chest pain, heart attacks, and other serious complications.
